When Nerds Wed: Three (and a half) Months to Go!

Three and a half months! I cannot believe there are only three and a half months to go until our big Pennsylvania wedding. It feels like just yesterday that he proposed, and even more recently that we went to Pennsylvania to plan all of the details!

Wow! Three and a half months is soon!

I have been wanting to do a monthly wedding post to sort of make a list of what is done, what is somewhat done, and what needs to be done, but for various reasons, I have not gotten around to it.

Well, no more!

With the wedding fast approaching, if I don’t start doing these wedding check-ins now, I’m sure I will miss some important details.

Part of the reason I have not gotten around to doing this on my blog, was because I was unsure of where to begin on the actual list making.

Finally, after a lot of thought, I decided to use the same format of a blogger whose wedding planning I have been stalking since before Mark and I even got engaged. She was recently married, and everything turned out so beautifully, I can only hope that adopting her diligence will make my wedding spectacular as well.

I have known Meghann since before we were in high school, both attending classes and being in shows at the same local community theatre growing up. But I have not seen her in over a decade. When I found her blog (and especially when she started planning her own wedding) we reconnected, virtually at least.

And if you want to know more about Meghann, her wedding planning, and the other aspects of her life, check out her AMAZING blog at www.mealsandmiles.com.

So, going forward, I will be posting my own “Wedding Check-ins” inspired by her beautiful lists.

Here we go!

List of things we have ready (In no particular order):

Things That Are Currently “In Progress”

  • Ceremony Venue
  • Officiant
  • Invitations
  • Suits
  • Wedding Favors
  • Centerpieces
  • Cake(s)
  • Decorations
  • Flower Girl Dress
  • Cake Topper
  • Wedding Band
  • Guest Book
  • Bridal Shape-up Plan

Things We Still Need:

  • Reception Shoes
  • A Hair Comb for After I Take My Veil Off
  • A “Cover” For my Dress
  • A Garter
  • Something Borrowed
  • Pen For Guest Book
  • Airline Tickets
  • Music Choices for DJ
  • Scout Photo Locations Around Town
  • Bachelorette Party
  • Rehearsal Dinner Plan
  • Day Of Timeline
  • Ceremony Script
  • Candy Table Supplies
  • Day Trip “Mini-Moon” plan
  • Bridesmaid Gifts
  • Parents Gifts
  • Groomsmen Gifts
  • Hair Plan
  • Schedule Dress Alterations (I really just need a bustle, and to pin one thing down)
  • Order my Slip
  • Hotel Bags
  • Seating Chart

I’m sure I am forgetting a few things, but the most profound thing I am getting from this checklist is that I still have SOOOO many blogs to write. LOL. Working on catching up now. I really need to get going on this “To Do” as well. I have more to do at 3 and a half months out, than I would like, and losing our ceremony venue was a huge setback. But I think this checklist should help, and I am feeling more focused and organized now that it has been completed.

How did you keep track of your wedding related “To Dos?” Did you make a list, or did something else work better?

When Nerds Wed: The Flower Girl’s Dress

I let myself off the hook with the flower girl dress.

I really wanted Callie to have a say in the dress decision. After all, she is the one who has to wear the dress – So I wanted her to be comfortable and feel beautiful. That, and my flower girl is fiercely independent (like her mom). I encourage that behavior in children (and especially girls) so Callie’s say in the matter was REALLY important to me.

Last week I got an email from Callie’s mom (Mark’s Aunt Gina) with a bunch of photos of some possible dresses.

Being flower girl dresses, they were all, of course, adorable.

I had my favorites of course.

I love this one because it matches so beautifully with the bridesmaid dresses….This was my favorite for sure.

But I also really liked this one, for the same reason.

Despite my opinions, I meant what I said when I told Callie and Aunt G that their opinions were most important to me. So I told them my favorites…

How cute is this little train?

And look how flowing and lovely this is. I can just see her twirling and twirling….

But I want them to pick with their gut. I mean, come on….it’s a flower girl! Se would be cute as anything in a paper bag. I will let you know which one it is when I know. :)

When Nerds Wed: Novemeber Wedding Planning

Okay…please tell me if anyone else goes through this…

I seem to plan my wedding in phases.

I will make a whole bunch of choices all at one, and then not do anything for a month or so. And then I make one other choice, and that leads to four more…and then nothing for a while. And so on and so forth.

Case and point, Mark got his new wedding band (and already starting wearing it six months early because he loves it so much). At the same time (the same day actually) our wedding invitation proof arrived in the mail. And in just one day I picked out my wedding band and came up with a plan for my cake topper.

Honestly, it started with Mark’s wedding band, but the entire month of November proved to be a productive month on the wedding front.

After coming up with my cake topper plan, I only had to wait a few days for the first things to arrive (I owe you a post on this later).

Oh, and my Dad found a cake design that I am in love with!

Wednesday I finished designing our custom RSVP cards, and ordered both those and envelopes and yesterday, our invitations arrived!

In a week or so, I will probably be ordering my wedding band (which I am sooo in love with).

I’m not sure if the wedding planning in phases will continue, or if that was just a symptom of being so very far ahead on my wedding planning.

I still have quite a lot to do, though.

I think the peacefulness of being way ahead on the wedding stuff is going to vanish, as some pretty big items are coming up to finish.

Tomorrow, I am going to post the to-do list for December, and expect a progress report on December 18 (5 months before the wedding).

Did you plan your wedding in “phases,” wait until the last minute, or was it pretty much non-stop for you?

When Nerds Wed: Special Delivery

Guess what was waiting for me when I got home from work tonight?

image

Our wedding invitations!!!

I am so excited. They look INCREDIBLE and I cannot wait for the last items to arrive so I can start putting everything together and addressing the invites.

I won’t be mailing them out until March (and as such will not be doing the big reveal until after that) but I might as well take my time with getting them ready so everything looks perfect. :)

Mark loves them too!

They are fantastic and everything I could have ever wanted. :)

When Nerds Wed: Our Ceremony Venue

There were not a lot of things that were deal breakers for my wedding. I tried to remain open about all of my ideas, because I knew going in to the planning that the fastest way to ruin your wedding was to remain stuck to an image in your head without being realistic.

So, there wasn’t much in the way of my desires that would be a “must have.”

With one exception.

I am getting married outside. I am pretty firm when it comes to this. And yes, I know that there are forces beyond my control that might force the ceremony inside once the day comes, but I was not going to leave PA without finding the perfect outdoor wedding location.

Making the decision to book the reception venue at The Ambrosia in Johnstown, PA meant that I was giving up the chance to have my ceremony and reception at the same place. There just isn’t any outdoor space at the property.

So before we signed on the line and coughed up a deposit, we had to have a plan in place for the ceremony.

Enter Mark’s father.

You see, Mark’s dad lives in a small cabin on a gorgeous and spacious plot of land with a million dollar view of the mountains. I had been there before and knew that this was what I wanted for my PA wedding.

All it took was a call, and we got the okay.

We took my Mom to the property that same day.

See loved it!

Of course, this means extra expenses like chair rentals and possibly a small tent, but we are going to ask around and try to get the best deals. After all, it is only a 15 minute ceremony.

Luckily the gorgeous view and aisle of tree is all the decor we will need.

There is even a lake for pictures!

We are so excited! Everything is falling perfectly into my vision for this wedding and May cannot get here soon enough.

What was your non-negotiable for your wedding? Anything you couldn’t live without or refused to do?

When Nerds Wed: Booking A Reception Venue

Back in June, Mark and I along with my Mother headed to Pennsylvania to plan our big wedding for 2013. We didn’t have anything booked yet or prepared. The only thing we had was a possible theme, but I didn’t even want to commit to that in case the only venue we could book wouldn’t work with my theme.

Oh, and we had one week to plan the whole wedding.

So, first up we had to book a venue. Without a venue we wouldn’t have a wedding date and without a wedding date we couldn’t book any vendors.

So the first full day of our vacation we were up and out the door early for our first of 3 venue appointments.

First up was the Ambrosia Restaurant Banquet Room inside the Knights Inn, Johnstown.

When we first drove up to the hotel, I was a little disappointed. I had been so happy with their online menu and the photos taken inside, but I was not impressed with the location. I mean, who wants to get married across the street from a strip mall? And I was bummed that their wasn’t any grounds or landscaping surrounding the hotel.

When we walked inside, however, my doubts passed. The outside of the hotel is still undergoing some renovations, but the inside is just lovely. The photos I had seen online were of the main dining room and not of the banquet space, which bummed me out…because how great are those Gryffindor colors?

The banquet space turned out to be just as lovely.

Everything was a beautiful dark blue (the color we were thinking about for the wedding) and we would have access to two rooms and not just one.

We would have a separate bathroom and a separate entrance.

The coordinator Nancy is amazing. She was prepared with flower ideas (she is also a florist) all of our pricing options including extras, menu options. The space was clean and she painted a wonderful picture of floor-plans and other ideas. She LOVED our Harry Potter wedding concept as well and already started giving up ideas to make things even better. There was even a bit of negation on the pricing which is great.

Mark and I really liked it, but my mother was sold.

But we still had two appointments to make.

We sat down talked about our second appointment.

It was in Somerset, which was much further away and not as nice of a town and we collectivity decided that we really didn’t want the wedding so far from Mark’s hometown. We cancelled the appointment and had lunch at Ambrosia’s lounge instead. The service was wonderful and the food was incredible. A good sign!

After lunch we headed to spot two (my favorite from internet photos) The City View Bar and Grill on top of the Johnstown Inclined Plane.

The Inclined Plane is really cool and provides an awesome view of the entire city.

The banquet room on the restaurant was on the top floor with floor to ceiling glass windows providing the best view in the place.

When we showed up for our appointment however, I was rudely greeted by a manager (not the one I made an appointment with). She told me that she was very busy and only had ten minutes to spare.

I was confused. I asked her if I had made an appointment and she said I had, but didn’t have time.

Um…really?

She brought us upstairs, and while the views were stunning the room was sweltering hot. She hadn’t even bothered to turn the AC on during a 100 degree day. She seemed annoyed when I asked questions and told us bar prices were non negotiable even if we wanted an open bar instead of a cash bar.

The room was dirty too. Mark found a used band-aid on the floor and was almost sick.

I was done. This was my number one choice, but they clearly didn’t want our business.

We talked a lot about driving around and trying to find other venues to see, but in the end it was clear that Mark and my mother were sold on the first spot.

I was too.

Having Nancy would make things so much easier for us. The colors worked, the food was awesome, the price was right and it was also a hotel.

My only was concern was the no windows in the room (though we could just go outside) and the lack of a spot for my dream outside wedding ceremony. We quickly decided on a plan for the ceremony venue, and made our choice.

Nancy at Ambrosia had sold us.

We had a venue. We put the deposit down the next day.

Details on the ceremony venue next time!

Did you have a hard time finding the right venue for your wedding, or did you know the perfect spot right away?

When Nerds Wed: M + S – August 13, 2012

I know that I have made you wait for the full recap of our Las Vegas wedding. Things have been a bit hectic both at home and at work since we said, “I do.” Add Guild Wars 2 to the mix and I have been basically useless.

But this morning I woke up and realized that it was time to fill in the details of our beautiful and perfect day. Since a picture is worth a zillion words, I thought I better share some photos of that perfect day!

We stopped and got our marriage license on our way into town the night before.

We celebrated all that night with good friends.

Took our last picture together before we would become husband and wife.

Monday morning, it was time to get ready though.

I had brunch with the girls, and my best friend Tamara even joined us once her flight got in.

Mark and the boys did some relaxation and pool time.

Then it was a mad dash (and I mean that) to get ready in time for the ceremony.

Viv did my gorgeous make up for me, while Kara did my amazing updo in ten minutes flat. How awesome are they?

We got to the chapel at the Excalibur in the nick of time, but I misplaced the marriage license. Viv won the whole day when she found it (on the top shelf of the closet) five minutes before the wedding. Yay, Viv!

Tamara stayed with me in the prep room, calming me down when I realized we had no marriage license and just being the bestest friend ever. Love that girl. :)

Then it was finally time to go.

Tamara walked down in front of me.

And as soon as I saw my love standing in front of me, I knew I was gonna cry.

The ceremony was beautiful, moving, short and simple.

And at the end I got the first kiss from my husband, the last man I will ever kiss.

I was so happy that so many of our wonderful friends could be with us to celebrate.

The Whole Gang!

Dinner was a fun affair at the Hofbrauhaus Las Vegas. Live Bavarian music, wonderful food, dancing and celebratory wedding shots. We bought the glasses. Everyone needs wedding glasses, right?

After dinner, we headed to The Hard Rock Casino for a bit of gambling and then headed off to Freemont street for the rest of the night.

It was the most incredible day and at the end of all of it, I got to take home my best friend…my wonderful husband.

When Nerds Wed: My Las Vegas Wedding Dress

Published on August 2, 2012, by in When Nerds Wed.

Since the whole idea behind the Las Vegas wedding was easy and simple, I wanted a dress that would suit that concept.

I knew as soon as we booked the Vegas Venue that I had to find a dress. It would be too much pressure if I found one that needed to be altered or ordered, so I just jumped into the search.

I did not have fun dress shopping.

I spent an entire day off looking around the mall for any white or off white cocktail length dress.

It shouldn’t have been hard. It was, after all, prom season. But everything I found was too short, or too modern, or too trashy, or too ugly. I must have gone into every woman’s clothing store in the mall.

I even went across the street to another shopping plaza and did the same thing. Nothing.

I went to the web, my ultimate answer in times of shopping peril, but was thwarted again. Even with all of cyberspace at my fingertips, I could not find a suitable dress.

It was beyond frustrating. My simple Vegas wedding was not starting off well. Finding a cute cocktail dress during Prom season was not proving to be a simple task.

I chose to go another route and a couple weeks later, went with a friend to “David’s Bridal” after work. The bridal consultants were not very nice. Even though the store was dead, and I was only looking at simple destination dresses they seemed honestly annoyed that I had not made an appointment.

Um…really?

Maybe they were just miffed that my price point was so low, but I wasn’t planning to spend much on the simple dress I was envisioning.

I only found three dresses that I was even willing to try on (though she did only show me like 8 to choose from).

Dress number one was NOT impressive.

I liked the sweetheart neckline and had wanted something more unique on the skirt, but this dress missed the mark. It just looked cheap on the bottom and I wasn’t a fan of the type of bling the dress had.

Dress number 2 was better.

Again, the right neckline, and I liked the lace and length. I just didn’t feel any sort of emotional attachment to the dress. It was missing something, and it didn’t have that touch of playfulness I was looking for.

I really like dress number 3 despite the length.

I felt like a princess, which was certainly appropriate for our Las Vegas Wedding Venue. I could see it with flowers in my hair, walking down the isle. It was more money than I planned to spend, and being a full length skirt would make it difficult in Vegas. I had planned to just wear my dress all night running around town after the wedding, and this was too long for that. I could shorten it to cocktail length, but that would be an added expense as well.

I didn’t say no to the dress, and even made note of the design for future reference, but I didn’t feel comfortable making the purchase either.

I left the store feeling very disappointed. I wanted to make a choice quickly so I could focus on the other details. I was actually somewhat depressed and fairly cranky when I arrived home that night.

Lucky for me I have an incredibly understanding fiance who loves me dearly. He was so sweet to me, despite how upset I was, and reassured me that I still had plenty of time to find the perfect dress.

Though I knew my efforts would be futile I hopped online again, this time tweaking my search terms to (hopefully) find a larger selection of dresses.

I found a few likely options from a bunch of stores I had never heard of, and really didn’t want to take the chance.

In Google shopping I found a link to a white cocktail dress from Nordstrom and clicked on the thumbnail for a better look. I didn’t like it. Too rigid and mature. It wasn’t as whimsical or romantic as I wanted.

I was just about to give up for the day when I saw something on the bottom right side of the screen. It was in a column titled “You might also like” and was the second to the last dress.

I gasped.

I clicked on the thumbnail to enlarge the image, and I knew. This was my dress. The price confirmed it. Half off and it was far less than I could have ever hoped to spend.

I was so excited. It would need a few special touches to make it perfect but it was everything I wanted for myself.

I checked to be certain that I could return the dress for a full refund (in case it didn’t fir or didn’t look good on) and then I placed the order.

I’m not gonna lie, I was nervous about making such an important decision without having tried the dress on, but the return policy set me at ease.

I needn’t have worried. The next week the dress arrived.

It was exactly what I hoped it would be. It was exactly like the picture, and it fit perfectly.

I still need to get it pressed and I am hoping to find a lacy slip to wear underneath the dress, but aside from finding a few accessories, I am so pleased with my dress.

I am really looking forward to wearing it. :)

When Nerds Wed: Viva Las Vegas!

Published on July 24, 2012, by in When Nerds Wed.

So, I know what you’re thinking. “You just went to Pennsylvania to plan your wedding for next May 18th. So, what is all this Vegas nonsense?”

Well, I am very glad you asked. :)

When Mark proposed, he was really excited about the idea of getting married in one of our favorite cities.

The place holds some pretty fond memories for the two of us, and Mark always wanted a simple wedding anyway.

He also wanted to get married sooner, rather than later.

The fact that he wanted to get married in a castle may or may not have also played a teeny role in this decision.

So, we will be (officially) husband and wife on Monday, August 13th at around 4:00 pm. In case you didn’t guess, we will be tying the knot at The Excalibur!

This is a preliminary checklist of how things stand. I promise blog updates on each topic quickly (after all, I only have a month and a half).

Things We Already Have:

  • A Ceremony Location
  • An Officiant
  • Flowers
  • The Chapel Photographer
  • A Dinner Location (There will be no reception, just a small group of friends)
  • Invitations
  • My Dress
  • Our Wedding Bands
  • Hotel Reservations
  • Discounted Hotel Rates for Our Guests

What We Still Need:

  • Dinner Reservations
  • A Small Cake
  • Mark’s Attire
  • My Shoes ( I actually just got these)
  • Everyone to RSVP :)
  • A Marriage license

I am sure there is more, but this wedding is pretty short and simple, so that is really almost everything. I can’t believe it is coming up so quickly, bit I couldn’t be more thrilled. I love him so much and cannot wait to be his wife.

When Nerds Wed: Save The Date

Published on July 23, 2012, by in When Nerds Wed.

It is officially official! We are tying the knot.

Not that there was ever much doubt, but now we have a wedding date. That makes it way more real.

We went to PA intent on keeping an open mind about a possible wedding date. We didn’t want to be so in love with a date that we would walk away from the perfect venue just because they didn’t have our date.

I won’t lie. I wanted April 13…but there were pretty strong objections to the date.

Mostly because of the high risk of snow.

So, we went for the only possible option in May.

Are you ready for this. Drum roll, please?

Mark and I will be saying our vows in front of family and friends on…

May 18, 2013!

***Photos by Steven C. De La Cruz

It is all very exciting.

We still have a lot to do, but it seems that we still have lots of time. I am really happy with our date.

It also will be the 20th anniversary of Mark’s name sake, his Uncle Mark. It was a total coincidence, but we are thrilled to share that special day with him.

I am so excited. Is it next may yet?
