When Nerds Wed: The Jewelry

Published on April 12, 2013, by in When Nerds Wed.

I really thought that jewelry would be one if by last minute decisions…not because I dislike jewelry, but because I had one very important piece…my something old, that needed to be matched.

You see, my grandmother’s necklace was always very important to me.

I still remember vividly, that when I was a little girl, my grandma showed me a beautiful silver pearl necklace and told me that when I was 16, I would inherent it.

On Christmas morning, when I was 14, I unwrapped the necklace and knew what it meant…knew that she must be dying.

It was one of the first really powerfully grown up moments of my life, but I stayed strong and happily accepted the necklace with a smile. She told me a bit about the piece, of its age (nearly a century) and that she hoped I would wear it on my wedding.

I promised I would.

And I did. In Las Vegas the silver necklace was around my neck as I married my soul mate.

It was my something old, but even more importantly, it was a reminder that those we love are never really away from us.

I have to have the necklace on for the wedding in May. It is I’ve of the most meaningful pieced of jewelry I have ever owned, and will be my way of carrying my grandmother with me in that day.

As beautiful as the necklace is, it can be difficult to find pieces to match. Silver pearls are fairly uncommon.

In Vegas, I got lucky, and a coworker let me borrow a silver pearl bracelet from Tiffany’s. It was my “something borrowed” and PERFECT, but that co-worker has since moved away, taking the beautiful bracelet with her.

My parents came through in a BIG way when they found all of the other jewelry I would need in the same location, at a store closing (actually, I’m fairly certain my dad found it).

The earrings will go so well with the necklace. That was the one things I struggled with in Vegas, and ended up going with fun dice earrings when I found nothing that would match my necklace. But these are everything I wanted and I am so excited to see them with the necklace.

The bracelet doesn’t match as well with the other jewelry but I still love it.

The ball is sort of a match, and it’s blue…giving me my something blue…something much needed!

Everything is going to be so lovely and I am really excited! Just a little over a month now! Wow!

I’m at the point now that I am looking at decorations and starting to think about my wedding day timeline.

But there is still so much left to do. LOL. We will get there.

When Nerds Wed: We Have Suits!

We ordered Mark’s suit today.

Yay!

This task was starting to stress me out a little. We knew in January that the guys prefered to buy a suit, rather than rent a tux for the same price and Mark picked charcoal a long time ago. But I just could not get him to sit down and make a decision.

Finally, two weeks ago, I picked out two fairly priced options and told him to pick. I wanted him to have at least SOME say in the choice, after all.

I gave him a two piece option, and a three piece option.

He chose immediately. He really likes the look of a vest, and pointed out that he could take the jacket off and still look formal if he had a vest.

I do love the suit he chose and think it will look great with the bridesmaids. I find it very classy and the price wad a steal, coming in UNDER 100 bucks. I like that.

We ordered Mark’s today, and I think all of the groomsmen, except one I think, have ordered theirs as well.

Three months to go. This is getting real.

I’ll have the 3 month checklist up today (a day late) so you can see my progress!

What did you do for your wedding (or plan to do). Suits or Tux?

When Nerds Wed: THE Dress

So, now that you have seen my bridesmaid dresses, how would you like to see my bridal gown?

Ha!

Just kidding!

But I did think it was time to share the process that went into making that huge decision!

Let me begin by telling you that buying THIS all important gown was SOOO much easier than finding my Las Vegas dress (that I didn’t even wear and ending up switching last minute to another dress).

I’m going to be really honest. I only went to one dress shop. That was all I needed.

But let me start at the beginning.

I really wanted to go dress shopping with my Mother. It was how I had envisioned buying my bridal gown all my life and I wasn’t ready to give that up just because we happened to live on opposite sides of the country.

That meant I only had one week to find a gown, and it just so happened to be the one week I had to pretty much plan my entire wedding.

No pressure.

I had a vision of what I wanted going into my appointment at the wonderful MB Bride and Special Occasion in Greensburg, PA (more on them later…they ROCKED).

  • I wanted a sweetheart cut (with or without cap sleeves)
  • I wanted something that felt “whimsical” or “magic”
  • I didn’t want too much “stuff…” and by that I mean lots of fake diamonds or sequins
  • Nothing too girly
  • Simple top
  • “Fun” Bottom

I created an entire wedding gown board on Pinterest for inspiration.

Here are a few of the photos below:

A lot of the dresses I liked, especially the final few I posted, really looked very similar to each other and I sort of figured that I would end up with something in that same style.

Boy was I wrong. I mean, the dress fit almost every idea I had in my mind about what I wanted in terms of my vision, but the dress itself is so unique and special.

I’m not going to lie. Buying my dress was awesome. Simple. Easy. Not at all stressful. The folks at MB Bridal were INCREDIBLE. I tried on a ton of dresses, I loved half of them. My appointment went over time by almost an hour and they didn’t gripe or kick us out. They just let me finish.

I narrowed it down to six dresses, and then to three. I was about to try them all on again to make my final choice. There was an element of each of the three that I loved so much, but there was always something that wasn’t quite perfect. Nothing that was a deal breaker though. Just as I began to undress and try on the top three again, the consultant came storming in with a dress that FIT all of my criteria, but in a way I had not expected. It was a sample sale dress, and not knew so if it didn’t fit it would need expensive alterations, as it could no longer be ordered.

I tried it on, crossed my fingers and squeezed into the gown. It fit like a glove. In all the right places.

I loved it, but I was trying to keep an even head about everything. I liked the other dresses too. I bumped one dress and added the new one to my top three. I was gonna try on all three again…

But I found that I didn’t want to take this one off. My Mom looked at me at that and said, “If you don’t want to take it off, maybe you have your answer.”

I did. And I kept the dress on and tried on veils. I had originally wanted to wear my Mom’s veil, but the dress I loved didn’t match it well and it was more important to her that everything be perfect. And so I found THE perfect veil that seemed to be made for my dress. I even teared up a bit.

It was the most wonder experience. I got to take the dress home with me that day (it is living safely in Florida for the time being).

When I get to PA for the wedding in May, I just need to get it pressed and add a bustle. Easy!

Can’t wait to put it back on.

T + R: The Rehearsal Dinner

Despite having a jam packed vacation in Florida during the past week, the reason I was visiting was to help Tina, one of my very best friends, get married.

She sure made a beautiful bride.

But before I get into all of that, I thought I would start at the beginning.

The night before the wedding we all had a rehearsal at the church followed by a delicious rehearsal dinner at Pumpernickels Festhaus Banquet Room in Titusville.

The room was set up so beautifully! Everything was just lovely and so very “Tina.” It was everything I had pictured for her!

And the food was INCREDIBLE, in true Pumpernickels style.

We had fresh veggies, crackers, and their famous spinach dip as a starter.

Then for dinner, the spread was chicken hunter, lasagna, mixed veggies, green beans, twice baked potatoes, and au gratin potatoes.

Um…yumm. I had pretty much everything except the lasagna and green beans.

Desert was these little cakes which basically tasted like magic dipped in chocolate. So good.

I had a blast talking with everyone and meeting both families.

Tina was understandable a bit nervous during most of the event, but in the end, it was a beautiful celebration of love for a really remarkable couple.

They are so frigging adorable. :)

Leaving On a Jet Plane…

All my bags are packed I’m ready to go…

Actually, that’s a lie. All my bags are most decidedly NOT packed.

NOT…

And My flight leaves in 10 hours…

Woops.

Why do I ALWAYS do this. I have a Mother that packs like a week before she goes away. Me. Nope. Ten Seven hours.

Oh well. At least I am going to get away with my husband and see my family for a few days. I NEED some time away from life. Truth is, there have been a lot of changes lately.

My last blog post was way too long ago…but it was also about my dislike of change and how my life has been in flux. That is the reason why I have been so long between posts.

I just have not known what to say.

Many of my friends want me to talk about more of my private life in the blog, and while I don’t disagree, I am a fairly private person and taking that step into sharing my hopes and fears into such a public forum is scary. Know that I am trying…but this won’t happen overnight.

Things with the big May wedding have been progressing swiftly. We just ordered our wedding invitations, a good two or three months early by the estimations of most wedding websites. I like getting things done early. We are just about seven months away from the wedding and we only have three big things to cross off the list:

An officiant…which is not a huge thing for me since we are legally married already. Though, since we do want to have a religious ceremony, we do need to find someone who can do more than a standard ceremony or vow renewal…

Either a tux rental or suit rental for the guys…

And a bridesmaid dress.

That’s it. Of course, little details make a big difference…but more than seven months out these three items are the only big issues left to finalize. I fear that the few months leading up to the wedding will be mundane. At least I know I won’t flip out from my normal last minute hesitations. :)

Oh, and I got a promotion.

A big promotion.

There, I said it. It is something I have been working towards for a while now, but given a lot of what happened over the past month, it was a bit bittersweet.

But it feels good. To work for something, and to achieve that goal and be recognized for all you do. :)

In case you didn’t notice, I have been writing this blog for three hours. So I would say it’s time to wrap it up. All packed up (now…but not when I started writing this). I have a snack for the plane, charging my camera and syncing my iPod!

See you in Florida!

When Nerds Wed: Wedding Inspiration

We have about 8 and a half months until the Pennsylvania wedding next May, and with the Vegas wedding behind us now it is time to start filling you in on all the details for the big one.

But before I get the ball rolling on that onslaught of blog posts, I really thought it appropriate to first reveal the theme of said wedding. You see, Mark and I are not traditional people and we had no desire to go the traditional wedding route.

I had an idea of what I wanted from the minute Mark proposed, and he was on board as soon as I mentioned it, but the parents would take more convincing.

Enter the amazing Steven.

He did such a wonderful job with our Harry Potter inspired engagement photos that it made our families almost excited about the thought of a Harry Potter wedding.

My dad quickly volunteered to make the wedding favors and possibly the centerpieces (he is an extremely talented carpenter and woodworking genius), and I think I even have my mom convinced to watch the movies when I get home in October.

I have found a ton of photos on line of a lot of beautiful and tasteful Harry Potter weddings.

We are totally using our sorting hat as well!

We want to make this as classy as possible and so the details are inspired by the films and books, and it is less about looking like a Halloween party.

And no, we will not have costumes.

I am so excited and luckily all of the vendors we have lined up are excited as well (though you will have to wait for the vendor posts to find out more).

I can NOT wait!

Did you have a theme wedding? Or did something inspire you wedding choices?

Happy Friday!!

Published on August 27, 2012, by in Uncategorized.

Relax, you didn’t sleep through the week. I know that today is actually Monday…but tonight is my last night of work until Thursday and that is very exciting.

I have not had two days off in one week since the wedding (and I only have one day off again next week), so I am going to make the most out of my mid week weekend!

I was pleased when I woke up this morning only feeling moderatly crummy after an entire weekend of sickness, and I would like to report that many hours (and tons of liquid) later, I feel almost totally healed.

Now, I know I still owe you TONS of details about my recent nuptials, and even more details about next year’s big May wedding, but for now you must allow me time to play Guild Wars 2 for a few days. Being sick and not really playing for a few days has been KILLING me.

Tonight I may be heading over to a friend’s house to kick my “weekend” off, but after that it’s going to be all gaming…and maybe a bit of house work. We still have not really done much since coming back from Vegas, and we really need to get our butts in gear!

Alright, almost off my dinner break. Back to work and then… TWO glorious days of freedom. :)

Recovering from my Vegas Hangover…

So, despite promising a second post earlier, it turns out that my first day off since Vegas was going to be a lazy day. A much needed lazy day, may I add.

As I write this, I am actually even watching “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” on the couch and having a glass of wine with with my husband.

I have a husband. :)

I promise to catch up soon. I need to finish up my Comic Con posts and talk about the AMAZINGness of the upcoming season of “Doctor Who.” Also, just sort of coming down from my wedding high and getting back to priority is a biggie.

So, I will be back…and soon.

For now, have another wedding picture. :)
