The Life of a Part Time Gamer: Exploring the Worlds of GW2

Published on September 3, 2012, by in gaming.

I have so many posts for you in the coming days.  Three of them are already written and just waiting to be edited. It probably would have been better to post as I wrote, but Guild Wars 2 is taking up all my free time and my better judgement.

I know how huge this next statement is going to be, after many years of gaming, but I promise that I mean it with all my heart.

Guild Wars 2 is the best game that I have ever played. Ever. I have never leveled up one character so quickly (my Norn Ranger is a lvl 25 in less than one week with only one full day off to play) and I have never played the same character this much withut getting bored and switching around.

Most of that is the game. I normally get really frustrated as I level up and start getting my bed kicked. I am by no means the world’s best gamer and when it gets too hard, I normally bail.

But Guild Wars 2 encourages exploration, even granting XP for discovering new lands. So when my level 15 ranger started getting her butt kicked on the next land she was supposed to be at for quests (a level 16 to 25ish area), I just jumped over to the starting city for another race and did all the beginning quests.

There is no XP penalty for doing this. The games knocks down your hit points to lower level (like 2 or 3 or whatever level area you are in) and you are awarded XP the same as a low level player would be. But you get to keep your gear and your skills so normally those maps are easier to finish. I only gained about 5 levels finishing the whole map, but I had a blast and when I went back to my land to finish my quests I had a much easier time.

I am also a ranger, which means I can collect new animals to journey with. I am making it a goal to collect them all, and that adds another element of fun as I run around the map in search of new companions.

So, you will have to forgive my absence. But playing the coolest game ever seems to be pulling me away. I mean, I am a higher level than my hard core gamer, husband…so you know I’m serious! :)

15 Days of Comic-Con Posts: #9 – Dungeons and Dragons

I think it’s fair to say that one of my favorite things about last year’s Comic Con Convention was playing Dungeons and Dragons for the first time.

I had been obsessed with the books for well over year, having read the Dungeon Master’s Guide and Player’s Handbook almost cover to cover. But because of one thing or another, I never got the chance to play.

Well we remedied that last year, and though we still haven’t gotten another game together in the year since that Con, I was really looking forward to getting the chance to play again.

And play we did…for most of Saturday.

While others were busy walking the exhibit hall and checking out panels on the busiest day of the Con, Mark and I spent hours sequestered in the D&D room at the neighboring Hyatt hotel.

After checking out of our hotel and grabbing breakfast (a delicious breakfast burrito from the hotel Mexican restaurant) Mark and I hopped the Comic Con shuttle and made way for the convention, and our main destination, the D&D room.

We played a really fun first game or two with a fun table of players we didn’t know (most of whom we would continue to play with for much of the day).

I had a blast getting re-acclimated to the rules and playing a cleric for the first time. Turns out I was a good healer. I was NOT good at fighting. In the first game the dice were seriously out for my blood and I couldn’t role to hit an anything I tried. Lucky for me, the NPC I was battling was having similarly bad luck with the dice.

I vividly remember sending a tweet from that game, citing that my borrowed dice was broken. Other players at the table took turns giving me other dice to borrow, to no avail. The only thing the dice did well was heal…

After those first few encounters, I still had over an hour until the comic signing I wanted to make, and Mark had some time until the next game slot began, so we went downstairs to the hall to buy some dice. Mine was clearly defective, after all.

Mark got some, too. It was fun to look through the discount bins of dice and make our own comic con dice set.

I decided that I wanted a BIG D20, so I found a hopeful bin of them, and picked out my favorite first. Then, I decided to design the rest of my set around that D20. Everything I picked had a marble look to them, but different colors. I wanted them all to be two colors each, but I could only find two, so I will have to keep an eye out for them in the future.

After we go dice, I headed to my signing and Mark went back up stairs to play a few more games.

After the signing, I picked up a few items for Mark or our friends, deciding we probably wouldn’t make it back downstairs again before everything closed.

Then, I joined Mark and some earlier players for some more D&D.

All in all, I must have played for five hours on the second day of the con, and I really have no regrets. It was a blast, and something a little different.

I played my cleric the whole time, and my new dice was way less broken so I even managed to kill a few things, and rack up some serious XP.

We hope that next year we can stay at the con all 4 days, and be able to dedicate one entire day to our favorite RPG.

Dungeon Master: 2-19-2012…and what is in store for TONIGHT

I have to admit, this show really is a great way to spend a Sunday. More than just cast members, these people have really became more of a family for me during the past couple of years.

The show is happiness, and adrenaline, and comedy, and fantasy with a little bit of magic mixed in…and our season opener was no exception.

We meet at the theatre between 2:30 and 3:00 on show days. There is much to be done in the way of pulling props, costumes, wigs, weapons…ect. After we get that finished it’s on to the rehearsal process. The first show back every season always seems to come with a bit more chatter. Everyone is excited to be back, and happy to see each other.

We had a pretty small season opener cast-wise, so we got started fairly close to time.

There were lots of details to hammer out. Though it is an improv based show, we do have scripts. As you can see, Cary was The God of War.

Coleman insisted on numerous occasion that he is not, in fact, Harry Potter turned Slytherin.

I was not buying his refusal. “Thou thinks thou dost protest too much…”

In this season of the show, The Karen God is having a bit of a crisis. She needs to search her soul, as the people of Atoll of driving her a little bit crazy with their constant spell casting. But, not wanting to leave the people without her guidance, she splits off aspects of herself. The aspects of War, Peace, and Revelry…God’s in their own right.

Cary and I…also known as War and Peace

Of course, she also accidentally creates the aspect of Chaos.

In the first show of the season, “The Fall” the three aspects (and the fourth in secret) take turns granting the spells and desires of the good people of Atoll, as an adventuring party sets off to find the Sphinx and the answer to the question, “What has happened to The Karen God?” You see, The Karen God’s aspects are granting the spells of Atoll in rather unusual ways, and people have gotten suspicious.

In an unforgettable encounter with the Sphinx in the show’s final scenes, the party is unable to answer the creature’s riddle and the entire adventuring party is devoured (this is called a Total Party Kill, or TPK…and they are awesome).

The Sphinx spares only the guide, Marko, in the hopes that he will return to the Priestess with a warning to never send another group to her.

After the show, many of the cast and audience enjoy dinner and snacks at Denny’s on sunset. We talk about the show, and a variety of other nerdy topics. Which US president would beat who in battle. By bet is on Teddy Roosevelt.

With my friend and loyal audience member/character Courtney

And for Today’s show, we pick up where that left off….still needing an answer to the question of The Karen God’s whereabouts.

If you are in the Hollywood Area Tonight come on down to

Write Act Repertory Theatre:

Los Angeles, CA 90028-5301

What’s going on tonight:

The Karen God has split in three while she is off finding herself like Julia Roberts. The War Aspect is temporarily in charge while she’s gone, shaping the world according to his vision.

If only someone had asked the Great Sphinx what could be done to bring the Karen God back. Too bad the last group of adventurers who went to find out never made it back…

Come by 7 and you can witness sample performance from Geeks: The Musical before the show.

$10/$8 in costume.

BUT….First person to comment on this blog letting me know you want to come (and make sure you tell me your full name) can have my comp ticket for tonight’s show. You heard me, free!

Hope to see you tonight!

Wanna know what is in store for you tonight?

Springtime for Dungeon Master and Germanyyy!!

The Shadow Council in tatters! Remy in charge of the Wizards of Winden!
But these events matter little to the Gods. Especially one god in particular
who has recently had a bit of an existential crisis. She’s going to need some
time to contemplate her role…maybe take a bit of a vacation. That can only go well.

Come ring in the new season, featuring an opening performance by the cast of the
upcoming musical, The Spidey Project (aka, that Spidey musical that opened first,
and cost far less). As always tickets are $10/$8 in costume. <<Unless you are the first person to comment on here! :)

SWTOR Intro, Part Two: Questing Basics

Let’s rejoin Stormborn, as we move deeper into Ord Mantell.

Some ass stole our ship, and that’s one thing Stormborn cannot tolerate. There is little in this world that matters as much as the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy. In case of death, her last request would be to be buried with it.

But before we can deal with that, we knock out a few snipers on the way into Fort Garnick.

Once there Stormborn picks up a few new quests and finally meets with her trainer.

She has two new levels to cash in, and with them the ability to buy some some new skills that include a thermal grenade and a close combat blaster whip. ‘Cuz slappin people with your gun is sexy.

The next stop on my class quests is to talk to this guy.

He’s gonna help me find my ship, so he sends me onward, towards a new map and the 8 separatist forces we must defeat to prove our worth.

But first…a new level. Because you earn XP faster than credits in the beginning of the game. This time Stormborn gains a kick that stuns a target for 4 seconds, and a more powerful version of a blaster skill she already had learned.

Level four opens up more general quests, and it’s time to make some money because as Stormborn says, “I’m always interested in working if you are interested in paying.” That a girl!

These hubs also give out quests, so keep an eye out for them as well.

I’m a quest-er by nature. I’m not much for PVP, and in this game especially I just love the story. So I generally pick up every quest I can as I move through the game. I grabbed 3 more on the way into the Cantina.(As a side note, you cannot PVP until after you finish your first planet and head towards your respective fleets….after level 10).

Always bind when you see one of these.

Its a quick travel point. Every thirty minutes, you have the ability to travel to any of these spots on your current planet, but only if you have already discovered them. It saves a lot of time in game, and saves taxi money. I always try to log out in a cantina to earn the bonus rest XP, so discovering these locations is especially important.

We will be moving onto the next map in a nearby village when I log on tomorrow. We have to finish the next class quest, and there are many more general quests to be found as well.

But for now, Stormborn is gonna kick back and relax to some music and drinks in the Cantina.

What kind of gamer are you? Do you grab all the quests and level while you advance through the story, or do you tend more towards PVP?

SWTOR An Intro, Part One: Getting Started

image

This is Stormborn. She is my super new, super cool smuggler. She was inspired by Daenarys in Game Of Thrones. Ya know, if Dany faught with a blaster gun and a rifle.

I have only ran the first two quests with her. The first, starts her class quests.

Each class has a specific group of story driven quest chains that will propel them through the game. These are the only quests where you are advised not to group with other players of the same class. If you chose to do this, you must enable that option or when you run into the quest area your group mate will disappear.

This is ONLY if I chose to group with another smuggler. If I group with a trooper, the other class that starts on Ord Mantell, I won’t have to worry about this.

Also, in class quests, group mates cannot interact with the NPCs and answer questions. They are meerly observers of your story. But they can still help you kill stuff, and earn xp.

Now, the other quest I did was an everyone quest. That means any class on Ord Mantell can run the quest, and when dealing with NPCs and quest givers, you roll to determine which character answers questions. You also earn social points for grouping with other players.

How do you like to play? Do you run better on your own, or do you prefer to play in groups?

Late Night Ramblings, a Fansite, and a Clash Of Kings…

I never did find the time to play SWTOR tonight. I am slightly bummed. I am excited to start a new character for the purpose of the blog. I am definitely making a smuggler. I have not explored the smuggler’s starting planet at all, and it’s a different type of class than I usually play in MMO’s. Also, Sam Solo? Haha. No, I won’t name her that.

But still. Sam Solo.

In lieu of playing today, I actually cleaned out my car, organized the hall closet, (finally) put away all the Christmas decorations, and cleaned the house. Oh, and I went to work before doing all of that. So, I think it’s safe to say I had a pretty full day.

Star Wars has really prevented me from doing much else in the past few weeks, so it is a nice feeling to get things done today. I have an early doctor’s appointment tomorrow, and then I work 1 to 9:30pm, but I still plan to start the character tomorrow. Hopefully.

I think I’m actually going to climb into bed and knock out a few more pages of “City of Glass.” I read the first two books in the series in a matter of days. I really don’t know why I am having so much trouble getting into this one. It’s not bad. Maybe a little slower….

Maybe that too, is SWTOR’s fault. I should really lead a more well rounded life.  :)

Anyone out there fan’s of Being Human? I have seen the first season of the British Version, and just the first episode of the American version, but finishing the first season is on the top of my to do list. I have some thoughts that I am going to share in the coming days but in the meantime…

http://www.beingfans.net/

My super awesome, super nerdy friend Kristi Hahn and her sister Dana started a being Human Fan site that has gotten popular in a hurry. It’s Called Being Fans, and they also have a podcast that has been nominated for a Shorty Award. You should stop by their site. It’s way fun. Don’t tell her, but I am totally gonna ask Kristi to guest blog at some point. She is best.

Okay, bed for me. No Project 365 tonight. I just don’t want to. :) Oh, but I will leave you with this gem of pure awesomeness.

Minds: Prepare to be blown.

Shipping off to Alderaan and Yoda pops into Project 365

So I finally finished Tatooine tonight. That planet is out of control huge with so many quests, but it wasn’t my least favorite place so far (that honor goes to Taris and its vast sweeping wastelands) so it was enjoyable right up until the end. Those last couple of quests killed me. I was just so anxious to move along and advance my storyline.

Luckily, I was helped along by my favorite smuggler (aside from Han of course).

This adorable avatar next to mine (With the Wookie) is Kram. That’s Mark backwards for those of you paying attention, and he is played by my wonderfully nerdy partner in crime/significant other.

We have been playing together all night, and I finally logged a few minutes ago because I can’t believe I have been sitting in one position for this long.

I think tomorrow will be a night off from Star Wars. My friend is trying to catch up to us, but also…I miss human interaction.

So for now, I am safe and sound with my crew aboard the ship, gaining rest EXP. When I return on Alderaan (This is the Old Republic, so it hasn’t been blown up yet) I should have a nice stash of double exp coming my way. Makes for faster leveling.

I’m pretty far behind on my project 365ing…so I’m gonna throw up some pictures over the next few days in an attempt to catch up. I am still taking the photos daily…It’s the uploading that kills me.

Alright, here we go…

1.17.2012

This is the ceiling at the Glendale Galleria, where I was working this Holiday season. I thought it would make a cool picture.

1.18.2012

My friend Pope’s adorable puppy Bonka in a rare moment of calm.

1.19.2012

“Yoda. You seek Yoda…” and hot chocolate, apparently.

No, really. It was late, and I was tired and I thought hot coco might make a cool picture….and Mark snuck Yoda into the shot. Yeah, I loved it.

1.20.2012

The Screensaver on Mark’s desktop is what it would look like if he were navigating an asteroid field. He is my favorite. <3

1.21.2012

Our bedroom has many Eiffel Tower’s contained in a small space. I don’t really know why.

1.22.2012

Fluffy white adorableness while watching the playoff’s on Sunday.Cute overdose.

Okay, that’s enough.

I am helping out at a new store tomorrow for work, so I am going to head off to read a bit of “City of Glass,” by Cassandra Claire. Book Three in The Mortal Instruments series. Really good reads, by the way.

I promise to keep you updated on my in-game progress. Still searching for answers to the plague.

How are you all fairing?
